Department of Physics

1. Year of Establishment

2006

2. About the Department

The Department of Physics was established in the year 2006. The department strives to uphold the motto of the institution – ‘Fide et Labore’, meaning ‘Faith and Toil’, and its vision – ‘Forming Men and Women for Others’. Working in accordance with the values and objectives of Jesuits remains its core principle. In its humble beginnings, it comprised of about 120 students and 1 teaching staff member. It has now bloomed into a department of about 800 students and 9 teaching staff members.

In addition to human resources for teaching, it is essential to be supported by favourable infrastructure and facilities. The department functions with ease in suitably built classrooms, incorporated with chalkboard and smart board facilities. Multimedia presentations and live demonstrations augment the lecture method of teaching, and create an interactive environment. Learning the subject through experiments enhances its understanding. Regular experiments and demonstrations provide hands-on experience to the students. This is achieved in our well equipped laboratories. The department houses two laboratories, one each for I PUC and II PUC.

3. Department Activities & Achievements

The Science and Mathematics Club hosts Physics - related events every year.

Students and staff members have made educational visits to Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum, Bengaluru, Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium, Bengaluru and ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation), in the recent years.

Resource persons have been invited to present talks, related to the syllabus, as well as beyond.

Students are encouraged to participate in intercollegiate and intramural science competitions and workshops.

The academic year 2024-2025 saw some interesting activities for both students and staff members. The Science and Mathematics club conducted an interactive session with Ms Lakshmi B R, Senior Scientific Officer at Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium, Bengaluru.

4. Student Support and Mentoring

While classroom teaching encompasses most of the student – teacher interactions; it is found to be insufficient in several instances. To enhance the performance of students, especially those who struggle with academic work, the department works towards providing additional attention to students through remedial classes.

Also assignments are allotted to students throughout the year to inculcate regular study habits and self – work.

For any further personal attention, if necessary, students are mentored by the staff members, and could also be advised to consult the counselors on campus.

5. Career Opportunities for Students

Physics, being a basic science subject, lays a strong foundation for diverse fields like,

  • Research and Academia
  • Engineering and Technology
  • Communication and Education
  • Data Science and Finance
  • Environmental and Energy sectors
  • Medicine and Healthcare
  • Government and Policy making

6. Future Plans

The department aspires to build individuals with a scientific bent of mind. We shall continue to work towards improving the students’ academic performance by using the teaching methods available comprehensively. The department plans to tap opportunities to increase students’ exposure to subject – related activities outside the realm of their regular studies.

7. Message from the Coordinator

Education, as we observe around us, is not quite adequate for students with different strengths. It is increasingly focused on rote learning and is reduced to a job - oriented exercise. While that approach might satisfy the immediate needs of some students, it mostly lacks the capacity to build individuals with interests and independent thinking.

Our aim should be to utilize the academic content to help students think, learn to be responsible, and learn from their achievements and shortcomings. Students graduating from the portals of our institution should venture out with more confidence and clarity of thought.
